A Nutritionist Tells Us the Perfect Smoothie for Every Health Issue

When it comes to conscious eating, no breakfast gets more hype these days than the smoothie. It's no surprise—it's the perfect way to load yourself with nutrients and protein with the push of a button.

Smoothies are also surprisingly versatile, and with a few added ingredients, your morning beverage can become a healing elixir of goodness. Hyperbole? No—we're serious. To explain just how your smoothie can help you recover from common ailments, we reached out to the queen of smoothies herself, nutritionist and THE/THIRTY contributor Kelly LeVeque, for guidance.

Read on to find the perfect smoothie recipe for a hangover, PMS, or the common cold.

The Hangover Smoothie

According to LeVeque, if you find yourself hungover (oops), it's vital to rehydrate your body and replenish your vitamin B and C. Here's how to blend the perfect recovery smoothie.

Ingredients

1 serving vanilla protein powder

1/4 avocado

1 to 2 tbsp. chia seeds

Squeeze of lemon juice (vitamin C)

Handful of spinach

1 small Persian cucumber (packed with water to replenish you)

1/4 cup mint leaves

2 cups coconut water (hello, hydration!)

The PMS Smoothie

When you're struggling through PMS, LeVeque suggests adding more magnesium to your diet. "Magnesium is almost like fuel for nerves. It's especially important during your period because as estrogen and progesterone are elevated, magnesium is depleted," she says. Plus, if you're deficient in magnesium, it can "contribute to migraines, bloating, increased PMS, fluid retention, and sugar cravings." No, thank you.

Here's the perfect smoothie to combat your chocolate cravings (ugh, it's cliché because it's true) and up your magnesium levels.

1 to 2 tbsp. sesame seeds (great amount of magnesium)

Handful of spinach (magnesium jackpot)

1 tbsp. chia seeds

1 tbsp. tahini

2 cups unsweetened nut milk

The Common Cold Smoothie

If you're battling a cold, it's time to boost your immunity. While most people look to oranges for vitamin C, LeVeque prefers strawberries because they "have more vitamin C than oranges, and they are a lower glycemic option." Here's the perfect smoothie to help you recharge your immune system.
