Science Says This $5 Cream Can Reverse Aging (You Probably Already Have It)
When it comes to anti-aging, there's almost nothing in the realm of natural skincare that we won’t try; you can check eating healthy fats, taking supplements, and using vitamin C serum off our list. But what if you didn’t need to go to such roundabout lengths to protect your skin, diminish the appearance of fine lines, and even reverse signs of aging? According to a new study published in the journal Dermatologic Surgery, your average sunscreen can do all of that.
The yearlong study, which was commissioned by Johnson & Johnson, asked 32 women to apply a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen to their faces every day, in addition to a standard moisturizer without anti-aging ingredients. The researchers inspected the women's skin on day one in addition to weeks 12, 24, 36, and 52.
After a full year of this simplistic skincare regimen, the women had not only not incurred any sun damage, but their complexions had actually improved in terms of texture, clarity, and pigmentation, reports The Coveteur. What's more, a reported 18 to 24% of the subjects saw a significant reduction in fine lines by the end of the study.
“So long as you’re living, you’re always getting sun exposure that triggers this degenerative effect, making our body age faster," study author Steven Wang, MD, director of dermatology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, theorized of the results. "But at the same time, our body has this reparative process that theoretically can repair the damage. So, if you can prevent the UV damage, perhaps it allows the body to repair and reverse the signs of aging."
Long story short: It would behoove you and your skin to find a light, sheer sunscreen that you feel comfortable applying every day. The fashion site recommends Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 and Shiseido Sports BB Broadspectrum SPF 50+ for daily wear.
