How to Be More Mindful During the Holiday Season

“Indulge” is a funny word, isn’t it? It’s something we are told to (“indulge in more self-love”) and not to do (“don’t overindulge in sweets”). And during the holidays, it’s an especially confusing term! While I personally think everyone is capable of figuring out what’s best for them, I do think there’s one thing we can all agree to indulge in this season: peace! After all, it’s a crazy time of year, and if anything can use a bit of calmness, it’s our minds. So if you want to give your brain a little love in the form of indulgence this season, read on.

Guided Meditation

Though I’m an avid meditator (every morning, first thing), I will say that when life is crazy, it’s not always easy to lead myself through a session. Enter: meditation apps. They help to guide you through sessions, leaving less “work” for your brain to do. Headspace is my go-to because the guy leading the meditations is British and has a relaxing voice. It’s also nice to let him do most of the work.

Yoga

Yoga is good for the body (we know this) and especially helpful for quieting the mind. In between trying to hold a pose and not falling over (and making sure you’re in the correct form), it’s hard to not let your mind wander. At least for me! Try to schedule yoga in once a week to give your brain a break. Your arms will also thank you.

Face-to-face connection

Our minds thrive when we talk to others and interact with actual human beings. But put the phone away—Instagram DMs don’t count. Treat your mind to the human connection this season. And make sure the people you���re spending time with are feeding into the energy you vibe with. Your system doesn’t deserve any negativity. Indulge in love, learning, and peace instead.

Get outside

Nature is scientifically proven to lower stress levels. Besides, we all know that a 20-minute walk can solve a lot of problems. Center your body and mind by spending as much time as possible outside this season—even if that means layering up and getting out of your pj’s. (Bring hot lemon water to keep you warm!) Give your mind time to breathe, turn off, and be one with Mother Nature.

Yes, I’m (once again) about to preach about putting your phone down. We all need a break from it. Especially your mind! Instead, pick up a book that makes you think in a different way. Many of us rarely learn new things now that school is behind us. So instead of filling your brain with thoughts of inadequacy and judgment from social media, provide it with a lesson of sorts. And nothing says the holidays like curling with a book near the fireplace, am I right? 

Enjoy, and tell your brain to thank me later.
